CLEVELAND, Ohio – Case Western Reserve edged out Ohio State as the best university in Ohio, according to newly released rankings by U.S. News & World Report.
CWRU is ranked 44th overall in U.S. News rankings for national universities, five spots ahead of Ohio State.
The No. 1 national university, according to the 2022-2023 school rankings, is Princeton University in New Jersey, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University.
Among just public universities, Ohio State is 16th. CWRU is 31st among private schools.
The consumer-focused news site uses 17 factors to evaluate 1,500 colleges and universities, including graduation rates, retention rates, graduate indebtedness, and social mobility, which indicates how well schools serve lower-income students receiving Pell Grant.
Other factors include faculty resources, financial resources, high school performance, and alums contributions. The full methodology is detailed on the U.S. News & World Report site.
The pandemic continues to change how rankings are calculated. Students taking the SAT/ACT sharply decreased, particularly among students from a low-income backgrounds. This year, if less than 50% of the class did not submit these test scores, the weight of high school class standing and the average graduation rate increased.
Many Ohio schools have moved to a “test-optional” policy because of widespread testing cancellations due to the pandemic. Case Western Reserve University removed its ACT and SAT requirements beginning Fall 2021, though students may still submit scores.
Other changes included part-time faculty with a terminal degree as part of the larger instructional faculty and reranking schools based on the 2021 update from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
U.S. News and World Report groups institutions into different categories, with the “National Universities” set apart through doctoral degree offerings and research activity. Universities that do not offer many postgraduate programs are sorted into the “regional universities” category.

Kent State University ranks 212th on the list, while Cleveland State University and the University of Akron rank in a grouping from 331st to 440th.

* For undergraduate business programs, Ohio State University ranks sixth nationally for supply chain management, 12th for accounting and finance, and 17th for marketing.
* For doctorate engineering programs, Case Western Reserve University ranks 13th in biomedical, and Ohio State 15th (tie) materials and 19th for mechanical. For non-doctorate engineering programs, Cedarville University ties for 18th in mechanical.
* For nursing programs, Case Western Reserve University and Ohio State University tie fifth in the country.
* Central State University ranks 40th for historically black colleges and universities. Wilberforce University is listed in a grouping for 59th through 77th.
