Boy, 16, appears in court accused of murdering 'bright and bubbly' Holly Newton, 15, in Hexham
A teenager has appeared in court accused of murdering 15-year-old Holly Newton.
The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is also charged with the attempted murder of another teen, and possessing a knife, following an incident in Hexham on Friday evening.
The lad, from Gateshead, appeared at Newcastle Magistrates Court yesterday morning.

Northumbria Police officer is sacked for sexual relationship with vulnerable victim
A police officer has now been sacked for having a sexual relationship with a vulnerable victim he met while investigating crimes against her.
The Northumbria cop, known only as Officer J, was found to be guilty of gross misconduct last week after a hearing heard how he tried to have sex with the woman without her consent as she slept.
The officer faced three allegations relating to the mum, who he met in 2004 when she reported problems she was having with her neighbours to police. He was accused of touching the woman, known only as Ms A, without her consent, having a sexual relationship with a vulnerable victim and engaging in sexual activity or inappropriate behaviour while on duty.

CCTV appeal after man is racially abused at Cramlington shopping centre
Police are appealing for information after a man was racially abused just days before Christmas.
It is reported that the 28-year-old had been in Forum Way shopping centre, Cramlington, on December 16, 2022, when at around 7.30pm he was verbally abused by a member of the public.
The victim was left distressed by the incident and contacted Northumbria Police shortly after, and the force has now begun enquiries to track down the alleged perpetrator.

Worries that Newcastle Clean Air Zone will push pollution towards homes near A1
The health of people living on the outskirts of Newcastle will be put at risk by the city’s new Clean Air Zone (CAZ), councillors claim.
After years of planning, new tolls on some high-polluting vehicles came into force on Monday – initially affecting older buses, coaches, taxis, and lorries driving into Newcastle city centre. The heavy charges, which can be as high as £50 per day, are being imposed in response to a Government order demanding that local councils cut illegal levels of emissions in certain hotspot.
But councillors in the west of Newcastle now fear that their communities will be the next problem area for emissions.

North Shields DJ Schak to play inside St James' Park ahead of Newcastle United's cup semi-final
A DJ who promoted his debut single by spinning decks on public transport and inside a local DIY store is set to play at St James' Park tonight ahead of Newcastle United's cup semi-final.
Shakeil Luciano, known as Schak, released his first song Moving All Around (Jumpin') [feat. Kim English] last year after being signed by DJ Patrick Topping's label Trick. The tune has been played on radio stations and in clubs across the country.
The 30-year-old, from North Shields, North Tyneside, has now been asked by the owners of the club to play ahead of the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Southampton on Tuesday night.
Schak will play a special DJ set in the Gallowgate East Corner between 7.30pm and 7.40pm.
Schak said: "Being asked to perform at St James' Park is a childhood dream come true. It's just an honour to be able to do something like this. I feel so privileged.
