Exams; how much pressure are students really under? – Messenger Newspapers

Exams: a topic many people are familiar with. The memory of late-night studying or preparation is ingrained in many people’s minds. Especially with upcoming summer exams this topic is on many student’s minds. However, many students are stressed at just the concept of exams. Is this a topic that should be discussed more? Should students receive more help? Or does it rely on the pupil themselves?
Should pupils receive more help in preparation for exams? A poll out of 14 pupils shows that 78.6% only have preparation for exams occasionally and 21.4% say that they don’t receive much preparation for exams. Could this be due to a lack of effort on the students’ side? Or perhaps the fault lies with people not having enough time to revise on top of keeping up with homework?
The poll also clearly shows that the stress surrounding exams can impact their mental wellbeing. 85.7% of students say that just the prospect of exams makes them feel stressed or worried. Exams are a crucial part of education, nevertheless it exerts an immense amount of pressure upon the students. This is an issue that needs tackling but how? Some steps that can be taken to avoid this are having a timetable or a task list of things to do. Another solution is consulting someone, preferably a trusted adult, if you are having trouble.
Many students also struggle to find time for effective revision. In the poll 6 students admitted that they are only able to find time for little to no revision. As well as 57.1% saying they find revision difficult. Could this be due to no organisation? Or possibly are students needing more hands-on help when revising?
Many students believe that there should be more help put in place to help students have effective revision and preparation strategies. 78.6% of pupils thought that there should be more help for revision tactics. This leaves the question of what can be done to help students? Do you think there should be more help for them?
