Cybersecurity Salaries: What Sophos, Bitdefender, F-Secure Pay – Business Insider

There’s a massive talent shortage in cybersecurity right now.
Cybersecurity threats escalated by 31% between 2020 and 2021, and on average there were 29 successful attacks per company, according to Accenture’s State of Cybersecurity Report 2021.
But, according to data-tracker CyberSeek, it takes 21% longer to fill cybersecurity roles than any other IT job, with more than 700,000 openings in the US currently.  There were also more than 500,000 roles needing people with cyber-security-related skills, but employers are struggling to find adequately qualified people.
The result is that qualified talent is in demand.
Cybersecurity professionals can expect to earn decent salaries. US firms such as Palo Alto, McAfee, and Cloudflare are known to pay six-figure base salaries, according to previous Insider reporting. European firms such as Sophos, Kaseya, and Bitdefender are likewise willing to compensate senior talent generously, according to Insider analysis of foreign-labor-disclosure-hire data.
The data shows what foreign talent earns in the US, and is likely higher than what European firms would pay domestic talent. The data, which ranges from 2019 to 2022, also only shows base salary and doesn’t include sign-on or other bonuses and awards.
Here’s how much employees can expect to earn at these top European cybersecurity firms in engineering, product, finance, and more.
Cybersecurity firm Sophos was founded in the UK by Jan Hruska and Peter Lammer in 1985, and is a well-known name in enterprise security.
After it was taken private by private equity firm Thoma Bravo in a $3.9 billion deal in 2020, it raised $65.2 million in a funding round in August 2021.
The company currently has more than 4,500 employees according to LinkedIn and a range of open roles on its careers site in IT and security, finance, product development, and threat intelligence across the US, North America, UK, Europe, and more.
Here’s what Sophos offered foreign talent at its Burlington, New York, Dallas, and other US-based offices.

Kaseya is an IT management and security software firm. The Miami- and Dublin-headquartered company was founded in 2000 by Mark Sutherland, Paul Wong, and Robert Davis.
In July 2021, Kaseya made headlines after its tech-management software was compromised by a Russian ransomware gang REvil, subsequently paralyzing more than 1,500 companies. Kaseya said it obtained a decryption key without paying the $70 million ransom originally demanded by the group.
Earlier this year, the company acquired cybersecurity firm Datto in a $6.2 billion deal
It has over 4,000 employees globally and a range of open roles on its site. A spokesperson said the firm continued to have “ambitious hiring goals” and that the firm was hiring across research and development and support roles, with a particular push in Miami and Europe.

Darktrace is a relative cybersecurity newcomer, founded out of Cambridge in 2013 and focusing on artificial intelligence-based cyber defense products. The firm went public in April 2021 but like other listed tech firms, its share price is currently dragging. It’s also been fighting to distance itself from tech billionaire Mike Lynch, an early backer and cofounder who is currently fighting extradition to the US on fraud charges relating to the sale of his previous firm, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard.
According to its website, Darktrace currently has over 2,000 employees and is advertising for a number of roles such as cyber technologists, and cyber engineers as well as in education, marketing and sales.
