Thank you for joining us today!
I appreciate your participation and interest in this important topic, cybersecurity.
Since I’ve been here as Ambassador to Poland, I’ve seen the importance of the strength of the U.S.-Poland relationship. Of course, there is a real need to continue strengthening our cooperation on every level across the public and private sectors.
It is no secret that safety and security are top of everyone’s minds today given the myriad of challenges the world is currently facing. However, citizen safety will no longer be defined solely in physical terms due to the prevalence of the internet of things and the fundamental role that digital infrastructure plays in virtually every part of our lives.
You may not be aware of this, but three days before Russia’s February 24th invasion of Ukraine, there was a spike in cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure targets in Ukraine and in neighboring countries, including in Poland.
These cyber-attacks were not conducted by random bad actors interested in exploiting security weaknesses for monetary gain. No, they were the product of a string of coordinated cyber-attacks with the goal of causing confusion and wreaking havoc on democratic institutions.
Recent events in Ukraine clearly show that modern warfare is not fought with just guns, missiles, and brute force; the battlefield continues expanding, increasingly using drones, artificial intelligence, and the types of cyber-attacks we saw at the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Our critical infrastructure, energy supplies, financial information, logistics, healthcare, and so much more are dependent on the integrity and security of our networks and safety of our data. We must ensure that these assets are protected against all attacks, physical and digital.
And the way we store and access such digital assets is constantly evolving. The pandemic caused countless changes to our everyday lives, and perhaps one of the most significant developments has been the fundamental shift in how companies and their employees conduct their work on a daily basis.
Work for so many is no longer confined to inside the four walls of a traditional office space. In this shift to hybrid and expanded remote work, it is essential that companies invest in the necessary software and other digital resources needed to create safe and secure means of operating in this new work environment.
