It doesn’t get much better than Texas when it comes to high school football, something that is backed up by the final USA Today rankings for 2022.
The last USA Today Sports Super 25 of the season was unveiled on Tuesday, with five teams from the Lone Star State making the list. This was second to only Florida, which had seven schools represented, though Texas led the way with five public schools in the rankings.
Duncanville, which beat North Shore 28-21 in last Saturday’s Class 6A Division I title game, came in at No. 5 after completing a perfect 15-0 season to secure its first state championship since 1998. North Shore was ranked eighth after a 15-1 campaign, with the team they beat in the semifinals—Austin Westlake—landing at No. 15 following a 14-1 season.
North Shore quarterback David Amador (8) gestures as he runs past Westlake Chaparrals defensive end Brett Mays (97) for a 39-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter of a high school Class 6A Division I state semifinal football game at Rice Stadium, Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, in Houston.
Class 6A Division II champion DeSoto (14-2) also cracked the top 20 at No. 17, with the Eagles’ only losses of 2022 coming against Duncanville and Baltimore’s St. Frances Academy, which finished the year at No. 10. Denton Guyer (14-1), which had its season ended by DeSoto in the semifinals, rounded out the rankings at No. 25.
St. John Bosco (Bellflower, California) was named the USA Today Sports Super 25 champion on Tuesday, with Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nevada) and Mater Dei (Santa Ana, California) taking the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively. St. John Bosco lost to Mater Dei during the regular season, but avenged this defeat late last month in the playoffs. Miami Central was the highest-ranked public school at No. 4.
