The Wilsonville High School girls wrestling team put in a solid performance at the War of the Roses tournament.
Led by senior Venelle Imbi and junior Jasmine Brown, the Wildcats finished seventh overall out of 28 teams to take part in the event on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Westview High School. Imbi and Brown both earned third place in their respective brackets, and all seven varsity wrestlers contributed to the team score.
Imbi made her mark in the 135-pound bracket, defeating Bobbie-Jo Brewer of Thurston and Nelly Lozano of Hillsboro before running into a buzzsaw in the semifinal round. There, the Wilsonville senior ran up against one of the state’s most decorated wrestlers, Cleveland senior Haley Vann.
After falling to Vann in the semis, Imbi came back with pins against Kelso’s Emma Ramsey and Sweet Home’s Lydia Wright to earn bronze.
As for Brown, the junior also ran into one of the best grapplers in the state. Brown kicked off the tournament by defeating Emily Zerr of Thurston and Nadia Leontescu of Cleveland, but drew West Linn’s Destiny Rodriguez — a three-time state champion and a Team USA athlete — in the quarterfinals. Following a loss to Rodriguez, Brown righted the ship with pinfall victories, each in under 50 seconds, against Dallas’ Ella Byington and Evie Olliff.
Other standouts from the War of the Roses include: Isabelle Quesada, who won three matches to take sixth at 110 pounds; Megan Haase, who reached the fifth-place match of the 155-pound bracket but was forced to forfeit due to injury; and Jane Simina, who won all three of her matches in the 155-pound JV bracket to place first. Skyler Welldorn and Gracie Gibson also won matches for Wilsonville at the tournament.
Next up for the Wilsonville team is a trip to Liberty High School in Hillsboro on Saturday, Dec. 17, for the 2022 Liberty Girls Invitational, which will feature more than 30 programs from around the state. Matches are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
