Welwyn Sports & Social Club is “so proud” to have made it to the finals of the annual Club Awards 2022 in Leicester last week.
A group of volunteers represented the Welwyn club at the Athena on Wednesday, November 16, where they had been nominated for Sports & Social Club of year, as well as Marketing Club of the Year, Social Media Club of the Year, and Website of the Year.
Unfortunately, the club didn’t come home with a prize, however they were recognised as one of the top six Sports & Social Clubs in the UK.
The other clubs in the top six were Cobham Sports & Social Club, Coombs Wood Sports & Social Club, Hindhead Royal British Legion Club, New Romney Bowls Club & Penn Bowling & Social Club with Cobham Sports & Social Club taking top spot.
The club said this was still a “massive achievement” as Welwyn Sports & Social Club were the only voluntary-run club in the top six.
Chairperson Sue Griffin said “While we are disappointed to not be named the top Sports & Social Club in the country, we are so proud of being named in the top six and all our volunteers who help run the club and keep the doors open every day should be extremely proud.”
Welwyn Sports & Social Club is run by a voluntary committee and voluntary bar staff who give up their time to provide a friendly experience.
The club was originally formed when Welwyn village had its own cricket and football teams, and moved to its current home in 1976.
The club and committee are “extremely proud” to carry on the founding members’ ethos of being a club run by volunteers for the benefit of the membership and community.
Applications for membership are available throughout the year. It is £10 to join plus the annual subscription fee of £20.
