Trapshooter Derrick Mein earned the first Paris 2024 Olympic Games quota for USA Shooting prior to capturing the 2022 ISSF Men’s Trap World Championship title.
Mein, a Tokyo 2020 Olympian, secured the first Paris 2024 Olympic Games quota for USA Shooting in Men’s Trap after landing a spot in the finals at the 2022 ISSF Shotgun World Championship in Osijek, Croatia, on Wednesday, September 28.
He went on to defeat British shooter Nathan Hales for the gold medal in the individual Men’s Trap final, 33-31. Earning the bronze medal was Yang Kun-pi of Taiwan with a final score of 23.
For Mein, this is his fourth World Championship title, which he garnered in different shooting disciplines. Previously, Mein was the 2016 FITASC World Champion, as well as the 2018 World All Around Champion and 2019 ICTSF World English Sporting Champion.
The last American to win an individual Men’s Trap World Championship title was Kenny Jones in 1966 at Wiesbaden, Germany.
This brings Team USA’s medal count at the 2022 Shotgun World Championships up to two. The Junior Men’s Trap Team finished its match in third place for a bronze medal prior to the start of open trap.
Next at the 2022 ISSF Shotgun World Championship in Croatia, Mein will compete with Will Hinton and Casey “Jake” Wallace for the Men’s Trap Team event, plus the Mixed Trap Team event with Aeriel Skinner.
After Trapshooting events conclude at the 2022 ISSF World Championship, the Skeet events will begin.
