A trio of online master’s degree programs at Boston University’s Metropolitan College have been ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the country’s best for the 10th year in a row.
The programs—in criminal justice, computer information technology, and business—also earned a shout-out from the magazine as among the best programs that provide financial assistance to students who are military veterans. To get that accolade, a program must first make the top half of the U.S. News rankings in that discipline. The magazine then ranks veteran-friendly programs in each discipline’s top half.
U.S. News bases its rankings on students’ opportunities to interact online with professors and one another; faculty’s academic credentials; diversity of online learning technologies, coupled with out-of-class resources for learning, career guidance, and financial aid; assessments from academic peers; and the “proven aptitudes, ambitions, and accomplishments” of students in the programs.
“The rankings recognize BU’s leadership in online education and increase the visibility of our programs,” says Tanya Zlateva, dean of MET. “The consistency of our rankings—across a decade—accentuates our unwavering commitment to providing the highest quality curricula, instructional design, student support, and academic resources.
“We continue to stay true to our mission, working hard to develop and present transformative professional education for our students even in the face of great challenges.”
Designation among U.S. News’ “best” allows BU to display U.S. News award logos on University websites, advertisements, and other media to promote the award-winning programs.
“Most of the undergraduate programs in the Best Online Programs rankings are degree completion programs, meaning the vast majority of their students already have some college credit,” says Liana Loewus, U.S. News managing editor for education. “The methodologies are developed with those students in mind, setting these rankings apart from those that are focused on recent high school graduates pursuing higher education for the first time.”
