ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey on Monday welcomed Sweden’s extradition of a convicted member of an outlawed militant group, calling it a “start” that showed Stockholm’s sincerity in assuaging Turkey’s security concerns.
NATO-member Turkey has been holding up bids by Sweden and Finland to join the military alliance, pressing for the two Nordic countries to crackdown on groups it considers to be terrorists organizations and extradite suspects wanted in Turkey.

The Syrian government has decided to close state agencies for two days in December due to severe fuel shortages caused by the disruption in the arrival of supplies and Western sanctions. Syrian state media reported Tuesday that the decision to close the institutions on Dec. 11 and Dec. 18 come at a time when many employees have been unable to make it to work because public transportation has been badly affected by the crisis. It comes during the winter season, when many people rely on diesel for heating. Iran, a main backer of President Bashar Assad since the conflict began, decided last month to increase oil supplies to Syria by 1 million barrels a month.
Minnesota lawmakers will head into the 2023 legislative session with a massive $17.6 billion projected budget surplus. Minnesota Management and Budget says “strong collections and lower-than-projected spending” are contributing to the surplus in the current two-year budget period, which runs through June. The agency also expects that economic headwinds and lower expected growth for the next two-year budget period will be balanced by a large leftover surplus and healthy net revenues. The agency’s previous forecast was for a record $12.1 billion. Democrats will take full control of Minnesota government when the 2023 Legislature convenes on Jan. 3.

Jim Stewart, the white Tennessee farm boy and fiddle player who co-founded the influential Stax Records with his sister in a Black, inner-city Memphis neighborhood and helped build the soulful “Memphis sound,” has died at age 92. The Stax Museum of American Soul Music says Stewart died peacefully and surrounded by his family Monday. A cause of death was not disclosed. Stewart was co-founder of Stax Records in Memphis. During an era of racial strife, white musicians and producers worked there alongside Black singers, songwriters and instrumentalists to create the “Memphis sound” embodied by Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Carla Thomas, the Staple Singers, and many others.
Get out the Kleenex, because there’s no denying that you’ll be crying for Jim Parsons’ Michael and his boyfriend Kit (played by Ben Aldridge) in the tearjerking — and often moving — relationship drama “Spoiler Alert.” Based on the book by Michael Ausiello and directed by Michael Showalter, the movie earns our tears, writes Associated Press critic Jocelyn Noveck, but seems at times unable to decide what kind of film it is, resulting in jarring tonal shifts, especially one at the end. Aldridge is particularly charming, and Sally Field is heartbreaking as Kit’s mother, coping with his devastating illness. The film opens in wide release Friday.
Poland’s prime minister has defended the controversial decision to pay high bonuses to the national soccer team for its World Cup performance amid high inflation and hardship in the country. Mateusz Morawieck said that the players should be rewarded for advancing from their group. It was Poland’s best result in 36 years. Morawiecki said that is worth “any money.” With a budget deficit and inflation of over 17% hitting the nation, a government spokesman previously said there would be no bonus and the money would be spent on training children and developing the soccer infrastructure. Some angered Twitter users said the taxpayers’ money could be better spent.

Wisconsin’s Republican representatives in Congress are calling on Democratic Gov. Tony Evers to delete the video platform TikTok from all state government devices, including his own. The lawmakers told Evers in a letter Tuesday that the popular video sharing app should be removed because it can be used by the Chinese government to spy on users and promote Chinese Communist Party propaganda. The request comes a week after South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a Republican, banned state employees and contractors from accessing TikTok on state-owned devices, citing its ties to China. TikTok has been targeted by Republicans who say the Chinese government could access its user data like browsing history and location.
The deadline for obtaining the Real ID needed to board a domestic flight has been pushed back again, with the Department of Homeland Security citing the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic for the slower-than-expected rollout. The deadline to have a Real ID had been May 3, 2023, but DHS announced Monday that it was pushed back to May 7, 2025. People are getting compliant IDs as they renew driver’s licenses, but DHS said the pandemic resulted in backlogs at state driver’s license offices. Because of the backlogs, many state agencies that issue driver’s licenses automatically extended expiration dates on licenses and ID cards, rather than issuing compliant licenses and cards.
Duke Energy says crews are making progress on restoring power to a county where one or more vandals shot up substations, but the repairs won’t be complete until later in the week. The power company said in a message to customers posted on its website Tuesday that it’s on track to restore power throughout Moore County by Thursday morning, in line with previous estimates. Nearly 36,000 customers were without power in the county, down from a peak of around 45,000, according to poweroutage.us. Authorities have said the outages began shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday night after one or more people drove up to two substations, breached the gates and opened fire on them.
While filming “Emancipation,” Will Smith routinely drew inspiration from the words “sacred motivation” that were written on the front page of a script. But the Oscar winner heavily leaned on the phrase even more in recent months, as he tried to overcome the backlash to his Oscars slap and banishment from the ceremony. “Emancipation,” which opened in theaters last week will be available to stream Friday on Apple TV+. Smith portrays Peter, a man who attempts to escape slavery while he uses his wits to dodge slave hunters and brave the alligator-infested swamps of Louisiana in his quest for freedom.
Apple Music wants to help you and your friends sing along to your favorite songs with a new feature it’s rolling out just as people gather for end-of-year parties. Apple Music Sing gives the user the ability to adjust a song’s vocals and an enhanced beat-by-beat lyric display, which both draw on the platform’s massive song library. The result is what Apple hopes will be an effortless invitation to karaoke. Display lyrics have been enhanced, going from line-by-line previously to syllable-to-syllable now, including breaking out the backup vocals and animating them separately.
