As the US capital, home to government agency headquarters that employ many cybersecurity specialists, it’s no surprise that Washington D.C. tops the list. While it ranks second for job availability, a metric calculated by finding out the total number of cybersecurity roles advertised on Glassdoor and Indeed, the city’s average sector salary of £84,628 is unmatched. This, paired with a cost of living of £2,810.69, makes D.C. a sought-after location for anyone looking to enter or advance in the field.
An average salary of £55,577 against a relatively high cost of living (£3,267) means Singapore missed out on the coveted top spot, instead landing second place. That said, the availability of cybersecurity opportunities in the city is unmatched (score of 10), making it a promising potential employment destination for recent graduates and industry experts.
In terms of job availability, Washington D.C. (score of 7.17) and London (score of 5.30) round of the top three. Conversely, Islamabad in Pakistan had the least professional opportunities for industry specialists, scoring just 1.01.
London ranks eighth in the list overall, penalised due to its lower salary of £74,416 and high cost of living (£3,004) compared to other contenders.
Cybersecurity professionals in Luxembourg can take advantage of the city’s flourishing sector, and enjoy an average salary of £110,768 – the highest of all countries surveyed. But while the six-figure wage in this city might be tempting, it’s worth noting that a relatively high cost of living of £2,562 means your hard-earned cash may not stretch as far as it would in other cities.

Abujab in Nigeria offers an average salary of £1,758 – the lowest income for cybersecurity professionals of all countries studied.
Lasse Walstad, Techshielder co-founder, commented: “The world of cybersecurity is booming right now and with the field continuing to grow, cybersecurity jobs are in high demand.
“If you are looking to relocate for a job, it’s important to take in many factors such as the cost of living and your expected salary, as all of these play a role in how suitable the role is for you.
“The cities mentioned [in the study] aren’t the only places, however, they do represent the best opportunities that await cybersecurity professionals.”
