According to a U.S. News ranking considering sights, culture, adventurous pursuits and accessibility, as well as expert and user feedback, the historic spot pictured above is included among the top 5 places to visit in Pennsylvania.
You guessed it: Valley Forge.
American history
The village, not too far from Philadelphia (also on the top list) served as the winter encampment for former President George Washington and the Continental Army from 1777 to 1778.
Featuring 3,500 acres of monuments, meadows, and woodlands commemorating the sacrifices and perseverance of the Revolutionary War generation and honoring the power of people to pull together and overcome adversity during extraordinary times, Valley Forge is the ideal place to visit if you'd like to refresh your memory on American history.
Journey through history as you walk past Washington’s stone headquarters and monuments, including the United States National Memorial Arch. During the warmer months, the park offers frequent storytelling sessions.
The top 5
Aside from Valley Forge, these are the top 5 places to visit if you find yourself in Pennsylvania.
1: Philadelphia. It's no secret this city tops the list. They have it all – historic sites, such as the Liberty Bell, amazing food (Philly cheesesteaks, anyone?) and the urban city feel.
2: Gettysburg. Best known for Gettysburg National Battlefield, site of a turning point in the Civil War, now part of Gettysburg National Military Park.
3: Pittsburgh. An up-and-coming city in western Pennsylvania at the junction of three rivers where you can enjoy reasonably priced food and art. Did you know the Andy Warhol Museum is located in Pittsburgh? On the North Shore of the city, you'll find the largest museum in North America dedicated to a single artist.
4: Hershey. East of the state capital, Harrisburg, you'll find what it perhaps the sweetest place in the country. The Hershey Story museum chronicles the community's creation as a model town for the workers at Milton Hershey’s chocolate factory.
5: Valley Forge – last but not least.
