Syracuse is one of the best places to live in America, according to a new report.
U.S. News & World Report has released its 2022-2023 rankings for the best places to live in the United States. Four cities in Upstate New York made the top 50 thanks to high scores in value, desirability, jobs and quality of life.
Albany ranked the highest in New York state at No. 21 overall, with an overall rating of 6.5 (out of a possible 10). The Capital Region had high scores for value, job market and quality of life, but only a 4.9 for desirability and a 5.1 for net migration.
Syracuse was named the second best place to live in the state and 38th best in the U.S. The Salt City had a 7.7 value score, 7 for quality of life and a 5.8 for job market, but scored below 5 for desirability and net migration.
“When you hear about Syracuse, New York, it’s often as the punchline of a weather-related joke,” Lauren Levine Corriher wrote for U.S. News. “However, the region has much more to offer than just snow drifts and slushy water. Syracuse is more affordable than many other major U.S. metro areas, making it a popular place to live for families and retirees. Young professionals also enjoy the region, both for its prices and because there’s plenty to do.”
Rochester and Buffalo also made the top 50, ranking No. 42 and No. 45 overall. New York City, the only other metro on the list, ranked 120th in the country.
Huntsville, Alabama, had the highest overall score in the U.S. at 7.0 with high marks for value, job market, and net migration. The rest of the top 20 U.S. cities all had scores between 6.8 and 6.5.
According to the methodology, the rankings were based on data analyzing factors like average salary, unemployment rates, median household income, housing costs, crime rates, health care, commute times, air quality, U.S. Census breakdowns of how many people are moving to and from each city, and a “desirability” survey asking respondents where they’d prefer to live. Job market was weighted at 20%, value index at 25%, quality of life at 32.5%, desirability at 17.5% and net migration at 5%.
