STEPHEN Fry has announced he is ditching Twitter after the social network's takeover by Elon Musk.
Fry joins a growing exodus of celebrities leaving the site since Musk's controversial new ownership.
The actor and presenter posted a picture of Scrabble letters spelling out “Goodbye” to his 12.5 million followers to announce he was leaving.
However, it is not the first time Fry has said he is quitting Twitter.
In 2016 he left saying “the fun is over” after a backlash over comments about a costume designer.
He later quit again after slamming the site as a “stalking ground for the sanctimoniously self-righteous”.
Fry said he is now moving over to alternative social network Mastodon, which has seen a spike in users since Musk's Twitter move.
A spokesman said: “Stephen Fry thought the time was right to move on.”
The actor is joined in his departure by US star Whoopi Goldberg, who on Monday told viewers of her US television show The View: “It’s been a little over a week since Elon Musk took over Twitter and this place is a mess.
"I’m getting off today . . . I’m tired of now having certain kinds of attitudes blocked now getting back on.”
The duo's exodus follows other stars including model Gigi Hadid, singer Sara Bareilles, and producer Shonda Rhimes.
Musk's tenure is already off to a rocky start, as he continues to crack down on fake accounts on the platform.
He has publicly banned comedians including Kathy Griffin and Sarah Silverman for openly impersonating him, and is charging ahead with plans to introduce an $8 a month price tag to be 'blue check' verified.
The world's richest man also faced backlash for culling over 3,000 jobs in his opening days, but said it was necessary as the site was losing $4 million a day before the move.
Despite controversy as new "Chief Twit", Musk claims the platform is now experiencing record user numbers.
