Sports in 2021 dominated the most-watched telecasts in the U.S. like never before, accounting for 95 of the top 100 programs. That figure is up from 92 two years ago and a significant increase from just 75 last year, in which political programming cut into sports’ overall dominance.
Among those 95 sports telecasts in 2021, 75 were NFL games — Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers accounted for 11 of those, including five of the top 15 — and 11 were from the Tokyo Olympics; the 2016 Rio Games had 14 of the top 100.
The remainder of this year’s sports telecasts in the top 100 came from seven college football games and two from the NCAA men’s March Madness. The NBA Finals, Kentucky Derby and World Series were outside the top 100 for the second straight year.
In 2020, the NFL accounted for 72 of the top 100, and 78 of the top 100 in 2019. Beyond sports, only one scripted TV show cracked the 2021 list — CBS’s “The Equalizer” — and that was only due to its coveted post-Super Bowl spot (a slot already allotted to the Beijing Olympics in 2022). Last year was the first time that no scripted shows cracked the top 100. Perhaps the most noticeable drop-off from the top 100 were awards shows. For the first time, there was no presence for the Oscars, Grammys, Emmys or Golden Globes.
