There is certainly a lot to be proud of when it comes to the state of South Carolina. There is a lot of history in the state, many towns and cities in the state have garnered national attention for a plethora of reasons, and many people love the "slow pace" lifestyle. However, not everyone feels the same way about "The Palmetto State" – as a matter of fact, a major national publication named it "one of the worst states to live in"! In this article, we will take a look at which national publication named SC the worst place to live as well as why.
Earlier this year, the U.S. News & World Report released a list of the best and worst states in America. Some notable states that were ranked high included Washington at #1, Virginia at #7, Florida at #10, and North Carolina sitting at #13. However, when it comes to SC the national publication said that not only was the "Palmetto State" one of the worst places to live – it is the ninth worst place to live in America! In order to come up with the list, the publication said they took the following metrics into account including "a state's economy, its roads, bridges, internet and other infrastructure, its public safety, the fiscal stability of state government, and the opportunity it affords its residents".
Although SC had a decent ranking when it comes to their economy, #18, they were ranked near the bottom half in every other category. According to worldpopulationreview.com, the reason why SC ranked so low is due mainly to "rates of crime and shortcomings in education". According to Quality Counts, the poverty gap in the state is one of the worst in America as well.
