The next prime minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, has embraced his Indian and Hindu heritage — and on Monday, people across the former British colony proudly celebrated his victory. Social media and TV channels in India were awash with congratulations for the 42-year-old Sunak, who is set to become the first person of colour to lead Britain. The former Treasury chief was chosen by a governing Conservative Party desperate for a safe pair of hands to guide the country through economic and political turbulence.
For many Indians, who are celebrating Diwali, one of the most important Hindu festivals, it was an instance to say: He is one of our own.

Rishi Sunak, the new Prime Minister of Britain, on October 25 delivered his first speech after taking the top post. Those who follow British politics close know that every Prime Minister makes a speech from a different lectern, which probably meets their style. However, the pace of Sunak’s election as Conservative leader and Prime Minister after Liz Truss’s almost seven weeks term meant that the new PM had to use a leftover lectern from the previous administration.
Notably, Sunak ditched his predecessor Liz Truss’ lectern which looked like a twisted stack of wooden blocks similar to Jenga blocks. According to The Daily Telegraph, lecterns usually take around 21 days to make at a cost of $4,500. Traditionally made from wood, they have metal cores to prevent them from blowing over.

Rishi Sunak became Britain’s third prime minister of the year on Tuesday, tasked with taming an economic crisis that has left the country’s finances in a precarious state and millions struggling to pay their food and energy bills. Sunak, who is the UK’s first leader of color, met King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, where the monarch officially asked the new leader of the governing Conservative Party to form a government, as is tradition.
Sunak clinched the leadership position Monday, seen by his party as a safe pair of hands it hopes will stabilize an economy sliding toward recession, and stem its own plunging popularity, after the brief, disastrous term of Liz Truss. At 42 he is the youngest British leader in more than 200 years — acknowledged the scale of his challenge as well as the skepticism of a British public alarmed at the state of the economy and weary of a Conservative Party soap opera that has chewed through two prime ministers in as many months.
