The American Red Cross is responding in Alabama and Georgia after multiple deadly tornadoes struck the region Thursday, causing widespread damage.
More than 42,000 customers remain without power across the two states. Selma, Alabama was particularly hard hit where a tornado bearing winds of about 111 mph was on the ground for about 50 miles, causing damage in multiple counties. States of emergency have been declared in both states and officials say recovery and clean-up efforts are underway.
Trained Red Cross disaster workers are on the ground in both states, providing shelter, meals and comfort to people in the affected areas. The Red Cross is monitoring the situation with local and state officials to determine what assistance is needed and will help assess the damages and distribute relief supplies over the weekend.
