Sports is a part of the U.S culture and ranks as one of the favorite social activities for an average American. A popular tradition of children partaking in sports from an early age has kept sports heritage alive.
Therefore, we see crazy fandom and love for thrill and adventure in the nation. Many global stars exist because of U.S. sports, including NBA and NFL stars. The dominance of fans surely makes the noise around and grabs the world’s attention.
The popularity of sports, especially the emergence of competitive sports, has created a large number of outstanding athletes and gathered all kinds of fans who love sports. Athletes usually express their honors or record their growth through custom race medals. Fans will also express their passion and support by wearing some custom pins representing the sport or some sports star.
The following are the top 10 most popular sports in America based on views and revenue.
On top of the list, it has to be American football. It originated in 1869 and became the most popular sport in the country. Every year, the viewership increases and approximately 37% of the population claims it to be their favorite sport.
The opportunities are available for multiple levels, from schools to colleges. Also, the sport holds the record for the highest number of live audiences in a stadium in the U.S.
If any sport can come close to beating American football, it is basketball. Basketball is one of the most loved and notable sports that has been played for a long time.
Basketball is played on the streets, in schools, and in colleges where players are promoted in the professional leagues like NBA and WNBA or the National team. The NBA finals are one of the most viewed matches and the average viewership last season was 4.25 million.
Baseball may not be the most famous sport, but surely it’s the national past-time of Americans. Because the game of baseball has all the ingredients of competitive sports, many people prefer it over basketball or football.
The most renowned league is the MLB, which features quality athletes and some significant personalities. Alone, the MLB all-star match grabs 9 million views on an average, which also encourages MLB betting, an opportunity for punters to wage.
Soccer, which is most popular and loved all over the world, surprisingly, ranks lower. However, with more soccer teams coming to the U.S, the trend is picking up and receiving more fame than ever. MLS is the only prominent league that gives opportunities to amateurs and professionals.
Ice hockey attracts a large population as well because of its fast-paced, thrilling action-packed matches. The NHL is home to ice hockey here in the U.S and Canada. While the NHL has falling viewership, it still grabs millions of views on average.
As a sport, tennis is still among the favorites. However, Americans are losing interest in the game and this is why there aren’t any upcoming stars, not even at the junior level. However, the U.S Open is still one of the grand slams and valued in the fraternity. The viewership keeps on increasing with every season.
In the U.S, golf is considered to be a pastime and the rich’s game. It still gets viewership, and its competitiveness may be increasing, but as a profession, a lot needs to be done. Although a good part of the population plays and enjoys golf, a cultural shift is needed to send it to the top ranks.
Boxing is hanging by the string. Yes, it’s still in the top 10 list, but it’s not as popular as it used to be. In the 20th century, Americans took pride and a great deal of interest. Slowly, it is losing its viewership, but some good American boxers are still keeping the interest.
The adventurous nature of the Americans has made motorsports famous. It’s one of the most-watched sports, particularly NASCAR, which pulls millions of views. The numbers are encouraging and with the emergence of Formula1, motorsports can rank higher soonest.
Power, force, drama, and fame all combined make wrestling a dominating sport in the U.S. Particularly WWE, which is the pinnacle of wrestling has given several celebrities. The sport does attract millions of people, but with the rise of other sports, it’ll be tough for wrestling to stay in the rankings.
3rd Is Actually Soccer Not Baseball.
Not based on viewership. Hockey is above soccer when basing it off that.
The MLB averages around 1.6 million viewers per game, and about 15.2 million per World Series game. This means the World Series has a total average viewership of between 60.8 million and 106.4 million for the whole series (4-7 games).
The NHL averages 420,000 viewers per game, and 4.4 million per Stanley Cup Final game. This adds up to between 17.6 million and 30.8 million for the whole Stanley Cup Finals (4-7 games).
The MLS averages 229,000 viewers per game and 1.28 million viewers per final match.
As you can see from all of the stats here, MLS has significantly lower viewership than both the MLB and NHL.
(This is U.S. based data only, obviously. Also, all calculations of averages were in means and done by me. The data was pulled mostly from Statista.com but a little from verified Wikipedia articles. This is also based off of viewership post 2008.)
This is views and revenue however, so I do not know how that factors in. If anything has anything contradicting this, I would love to hear it to see if I made a mistake.
I think hockey should be above soccer. Soccer is definitely more popular to play but it doesn’t get put on the popular sports channels as often.
