PRINCE Harry has broken his silence on the "sadistic" rumour that Princess Diana's former lover, Major James Hewitt, is his real father.
Speaking in his explosive new memoir Spare, Harry writes how King Charles would often joke that he wasn't the prince's real dad.
Harry said: “He’d laugh and laugh, though it was a remarkably unfunny joke, given the rumour circulating just then that my actual father was one of Mummy’s former lovers: Major James Hewitt."
The duke goes on to add that this rumour, which is rooted in the fact both Harry and James Hewitt have ginger hair, persisted out of “sadism.”
He added: “Readers were delighted by the idea that the younger child of Prince Charles wasn’t the child of Prince Charles. Maybe it made them feel better about their lives that a young prince’s life was laughable.”

Royal photographer, Arthur Edwards, has claimed that Prince Harry's comments that King Charles has made no attempt to reconcile with him are "rubbish".
Writing in his comment article for The Sun Online, Arthur said: "Harry's insistence that he has made no attempt to reconcile with him is just rubbish.
"Let's look at the facts.
"Last year when Her Majesty the Queen died Charles made sure Harry was a key part of the state occasions.
"He allowed him to wear his uniform at the Queen's vigil.
"He gave him a prime position at the funeral.
"He allowed him to do the walkabout with Prince William at Windsor, meeting grieving members of the public.
"And, perhaps most significantly, Charles spoke lovingly of him and Meghan in his first speech as our new King.
"These are not the actions of someone who has no wish to reconcile."
Prince Harry was informed that his father was the now the King by an article from the BBC.
He wrote: "When the plane started to descend, I saw my mobile phone light up. It was a message from Meg: 'call me as soon as you read this'.
"I checked the BBC webpage. My grandmother had died. My father was the King. I put on a black tie, stepped off the plane into heavy drizzle."
The prince added: "Then my father called again. He told me I was welcome at Balmoral, but… without her. He started to explain his reasons, but they didn't make any sense at all, and it was disrespectful as well. I did not tolerate it from him.
"Don't even think about talking about my wife like that.
"Repentant, he said, stammering, that he simply didn't want the place to be full of people. Nobody's wife was going to go, not even Kate, he told me, so Meg shouldn't either."
Prince Harry has shockingly accused Camilla of leaking stories to the press and claims she launched a campaign to marry Charles to get the crown.
In an explosive section of his biography ‘Spare’ the Duke of Sussex tells of the King and Queen Consort’s relationship – and how he and William begged their father not to marry her.
In another bombshell, he accuses Camilla of leaking details of her conversation with William to the press.
He says the information could only have come from the communications person that Camilla convinced his dad to hire.
The brothers' difficulties have been speculated about for years, but royal expert Ingrid Seward claims it has always been a tricky relationship.
She told The Sun: “Harry and William have always had this rivalry and the idea that they were always great friends simply isn’t true.
“I believe Harry’s life with William was a fight from early childhood right up until William went away on his gap year.
“After William returned Harry said, ‘I get on much better with him now. He’s changed a lot’.”
Prince Harry speaks of his experience with drugs in his new book Spare.
Opening up about taking drugs, Harry writes: “Of course I had been doing cocaine around this time.
“At someone’s country house during a hunting weekend, I’d been offered a line, and I’d done a few more since.
“It wasn’t much fun, and it didn’t make me particularly happy, as it seemed to make everyone around me.
“But it did make me feel different, and that was the main goal. Feel. Different.
“I was a deeply unhappy 17-year-old willing to try almost anything that would alter the status quo. That was what I told myself anyway.”

From drug stories to romps with older women and fights with his brother, Prince Harry's upcoming memoir seemingly has it all.
But what royal revelation from the duke's memoir do you think is most damaging?
In a rather surprising revelation from his new memoir Spare, Prince reveals he had a frostbitten penis during William and Kate's wedding.
The Prince had been left with frostbite on his ears, cheeks and…"todger."
He had sustained the injuries during a 200-mile charity walk across the arctic.
He wrote: “While the ears and cheeks were already healing, the todger wasn’t. It was becoming more of an issue by the day".
The Taliban has sensationally come out in response to Prince Harry's claim he killed 25 of their fighters while on tour in Afghanistan.
Taliban police spokesman Khalid Zadran said: "Prince Harry will always be remembered in Helmand – Afghans will never forget the killing of their innocent countrymen.
"The perpetrators of such crimes will one day be brought to the international court and criminals like Harry who proudly confess their crimes will be brought to the court table in front of the international community."
Prince Harry describes his time in the army in his book Spare.
The Prince writes: “So my number: 25. It wasn’t a number that gave me any satisfaction. But neither was it a number that made me feel ashamed.
“In the heat and fog of combat, I didn’t think of those 25 as people. I’d been trained to ‘other-ize’ them.”

The prince wrote: "Then my father called again. He told me I was welcome at Balmoral, but… without her (Meghan Markle).
"He started to explain his reasons, but they didn't make any sense at all, and it was disrespectful as well. I did not tolerate it from him.

Prince Harry has claimed that he and Prince William were “dissuaded” from asking for an investigation into his mother’s death after asking multiple questions.
The Duke of Sussex wrote: “Especially the summary conclusion, that our mother’s driver was drunk and, as a result, that was the only cause of the accident. It was simplistic and absurd.
“Even if the man had been drinking, even if he had been drunk, he wouldn’t have had any problem driving through such a short tunnel. Unless paparazzi were following him and dazzled him.
“Why had those paparazzi got off lightly? Why weren’t they in prison? Who had sent them? And why weren’t those people in jail either? What other reason could there be apart from corruption and cover-ups being the order of the day?
“We agreed on all those questions, and also what we should do next. We would issue a statement, asking jointly for the investigation to be reopened. We might call a press conference. Those who decided dissuaded us.”
Prince Harry has opened up about how he lost his virginity in his new memoir Spare.
The duke speaks of how a royal bodyguard, named Marko, came to find him at school in 2001 seeking to "find out the truth."

“The truth, Marko?
“Marko said: ‘About whether or not you’re doing drugs, Harry’.”

Harry wrote: “Beside the toilet was a round silver bin, the kind with a foot pedal to open the lid. I stared at the bin. It stared back. Then it became . . . a head.
“I stepped on the pedal and the head opened its mouth. A huge open grin.
“I laughed, turned away, took a p***. Now the loo became a head too. The bowl was its gaping maw, the hinges of the seat were its piercing silver eyes. It said, ‘Aaah’.”

Royal expert, Angela Levin has hit out at Prince Harry for putting "all apologies on others" after excerpts were released from his memoir.
Angela Tweeted: "At nearly 40 and after loads of therapy Harry still puts all apologies on others.
"He also seems to insist that he will come to the Coronation if his demands are met.
"Can't see anyone go down on their knees. More and more people don't want him there. His loss."
In a leaked extract from Prince Harry’s explosive new memoir, the runaway royal outlines an alleged altercation between him and his older brother William.
According to the extract, released by The Guardian, the two brothers clashed after Prince Willaim voiced his frustrations with Meghan Markle.
Harry reportedly told a “piping hot” William: “Willy, I can’t speak to you when you’re like this.”
Harry then allegedly writes: “He set down the water, called me another name, then came at me. It all happened so fast. So very fast.
“He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me.
“I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.”
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams has told how he believes Harry is using his book to “assassinate” his brother’s character.
He told The Sun: “If these excerpts are anything to go by it seems this book is a nuclear missile sent for the palace.
“There is no doubt that Harry is attempting a character assassination at his brother.
“In the Netflix show we heard how William was screaming at him in Sandringham – now we have claims of an actual assault.
“It seems to many that the Sussexes are jealous of the Prince and Princess of Wales popularity and Harry is trying to injure William's reputation because of this.
“It's hypocritical – he says he wants his brother and father back but with these allegations does he really think it will lead to a reconciliation?
“There is no going back from here. These allegations in the book are the final nail in the coffin for their relationship.”
Harry has claimed his brother and Kate Middleton encouraged him to wear his notorious Nazi uniform to a fancy dress party, according to a leaked excerpt from his book.
In a segment of the book, seen by Page Six, Harry describes selecting the outfit, saying it was a choice between two costumes – a pilot uniform or a Nazi one.
“I phoned Willy and Kate, asked what they thought. Nazi uniform, they said,” Harry writes, adding that when he went home and put it on for them. “They both howled. Worse than Willy’s leotard outfit! Way more ridiculous! Which, again, was the point.”
Harry’s outfit caused widespread outcry at the time, forcing Clarence House to quickly issue a written statement from the prince apologising for any offence, and there were indications that he received a dressing down from his father King Charles, who was then the Prince of Wales.
In the statement, Harry said he was "very sorry if I caused any offence or embarrassment to anyone".
