The need for physician assistants is expected to increase.
The US News & World Report calculated the best jobs of 2023 by analyzing data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics to identify jobs with the greatest hiring demand. Physician assistant (PA) was ranked as the 4th best job in the US for 2023 and appeared in several other categories as well. All jobs were scored using 7 component measurements:
Jobs are ranked in an overall top 100 list, a best-paying list, and 12 occupational industry lists. Most notably, PAs ranked #4 out of 100 for the overall best jobs. Other jobs among the top 5 include software developer, nurse practitioner, medical and health services manager, and information security analyst.
For the best healthcare jobs of 2023, PAs ranked #2 out of 29. Other jobs among the best health care jobs include nurse practitioner, physical therapist, dentist, and veterinarian.
Last fall, Dermatology Times® spoke to Renata Block, MMS, PA-C, past president of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants (SDPA), and a practicing PA based in Chicago, Illinois, at the 2022 SDPA Fall Conference in Miami, Florida. The conference is specifically designed by dermatology PAs, for dermatology PAs. Block mentioned “This year we have something called the Townhall where we have the NCCPA, AAPA and of course, SDPA, answering questions from our members and really encouraging them to step up and use their voices to let the public know of how much we contribute to patient care. What differences are we making to the country's health care? We are learning that 98 million people are unable to get access to health care. This is a perfect opportunity for dermatology PAs to get involved, make a difference, and be able to give these people the health care that is needed.”
Lauren Miller, MPAS, PA-C, current president of SDPA, noted that the PA profession consistently ranks as a top job in the US because the industry allows health care individuals the opportunity to use advanced medical training and technology to help patients reach their health care goals. Miller expects the need for PAs to continually increase.
