Iowa Hawkeyes No. 13 in USA TODAY Sports' way-too-early college … – Hawkeyes Wire

The 2022 college football season has officially come to a close. We are now just a touch under nine months away from the 2023 season kicking off and a whole lot of storylines, changes, and drama in between. For the Iowa Hawkeyes, there has been no shortage of news since their regular season ended be it transfers, recruiting news, or eyes on next season.
With the attention moving to next season, eyes are looking at who may be some of the best teams in the country. USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg believes Iowa may be one of those teams with the Hawkeyes coming in at No. 13 in his way-too-early top 25 for the 2023 season.
Like USC’s defense, Iowa’s offense can’t get any worse after a historically inept 2022 season. Iowa ranked 129th in the FBS in yards per play and 130th in yards per game. Even with this sputtering group, the Hawkeyes still won eight games and finished tied for second in the Big Ten West. The 2023 team welcomes in Michigan transfer quarterback Cade McNamara, giving Iowa a proven Big Ten starter at a position of major need. The defense loses stud linebacker Jack Campbell, but c’mon: Iowa’s still going to get stops. – Myerberg, USA TODAY Sports
The reasons behind Myerberg’s logic are hard to dispute. Iowa has went out and got the needed help to try and turn the tide offensively by adding McNamara, tight end Erick All, and wide receiver Seth Anderson all via the transfer portal.
Defensively, Iowa will reload rather than rebuild as they always do. Xavier Nwankpa, Cooper DeJean, and Sebastian Castro all flashed in the bowl game and will play behind a stout defensive front seeing Joe Evans and Noah Shannon coming back.
Joining Iowa in the way-too-early top 25 are fellow Big Ten members including No. 2 Michigan, No. 5 Penn State, No. 6 Ohio State, and No. 25 Wisconsin.
The Hawkeyes 2023 season begins on Saturday, September 2, 2023, when they welcome in the Utah State Aggies to Kinnick Stadium.
