FIFA's match attendance figures questioned; Wembley lit up in rainbow colours; 'sun is setting' on Wales, fans admit | World Cup day 6 as it happened – Sky News

Wales fans said they were “devastated” after a last-gasp defeat left the team on the brink of World Cup elimination; England were held to a goalless draw against the USA in their second match.
That’s all for our coverage on the World Cup in Qatar tonight.
We’ll be back later with more World Cup-related news.
England once again failed to beat the USA in a World Cup today as Gareth Southgate’s side were held to a goalless draw in their second Group B fixture.
However, the path to the knockout stage is still clear for England after Wales suffered a damaging 2-0 loss to Iran and had goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey sent off.
Taking a look at the Group B standings, we can see that Gareth Southgate’s men are still on top with four points after their earlier win against Iran – only a defeat to Wales on Tuesday by four goals or more would prevent England from making the next stage.
Following the match tonight, England coach Gareth Southgate said he was keen to focus on his side’s “resilience” and retaining control of their World Cup destiny.
“I knew it would be difficult for us after such a high (against Iran) to replicate that type of performance, so I’m really pleased with how the players have applied themselves,” Southgate told ITV.

“Some of our quality in the final third could have been a little bit better, but we’ve shown great resilience to defend against an opponent that kept asking questions and we’ve just not been able to open them up with that really clear-cut chance.”
England’s opening Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy will take place in Naples, the Italian football federation has confirmed.

Italy, who beat England at Wembley on penalties to win Euro 2020, will return to play in Naples almost 10 years after the 2014 World Cup qualifying fixture against Armenia.
The Italian football federation confirmed the Group C campaign will begin at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on 23 March.
Roberto Mancini’s side did not qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, having been knocked out of the play-offs by North Macedonia.
A Qatar-based broadcaster is in talks with FIFA after its World Cup streaming service was blocked in Saudi Arabia.

The broadcaster, beIN SPORTS, holds the rights to World Cup matches in Saudi Arabia and will screen 22 of them free-to-air there.
However, the remaining 42 can only be watched via its streaming service, which has been blocked in Saudi Arabia since last Sunday.
The broadcaster is now in urgent talks with FIFA to resolve the issue.
It comes amid the context of Saudi Arabia seeking to court favour at FIFA amid its interest in co-hosting the 2030 men’s World Cup.
It also comes at a time when the Saudi sports minister is giving interviews to broadcasters talking about the potential for private Saudi investors to buy Liverpool and Manchester United, and for Cristiano Ronaldo to play in the kingdom.
Football fans gathered at Al Bidda Park in Doha tonight as England faced the USA.
Gareth Southgate’s men currently top Group B with four points following their earlier win against Iran but tonight they were held to a goalless draw against the USA.
Progress to the last 16 remains in England’s hands, but this match is a wake-up call that increases the pressure heading into Tuesday’s eagerly-anticipated clash with neighbours Wales.
The Wembley Stadium arch was lit up in rainbow colours tonight following a week at the World Cup dominated by a row over a rainbow-coloured armband.

Seven European nations, including England and Wales, had hoped to wear the armband as part of a year-long OneLove anti- discrimination campaign in Qatar, but had to abandon those plans when FIFA threatened them with sporting sanctions.
There had been speculation over whether England might follow Germany and stage an on-pitch protest, but in the build-up to kick-off in England’s second match against the USA, the Football Association demonstrated its support for the campaign by lighting up the arch on the national stadium in north London.
The FA said in a statement: “The FA will continue to show our support to the LGBTQ+ community and all other communities during this tournament and long beyond, starting with lighting up the Wembley Stadium arch in rainbow colours for Friday night’s match with the USA.”
England and the USA have drawn 0-0 in their match at the Al Khor’s Al Bayt Stadium.
The draw means that England will have to wait to confirm their place in the last 16 of the World Cup next week.
The Group B leaders would have progressed with a victory.

Football fans have been arriving in their droves at the Al Khor’s Al Bayt Stadium ahead of the England v USA match tonight.
The United States drew 1-1 against Wales in their opening match this week.

Meanwhile, England thrashed Iran 6-2 in their opening match at Khalifa International Stadium.
USA fans were seen cheering on their team ahead of their match against England at the Al Khor’s Al Bayt Stadium tonight.
Earlier this week, USA captain Tyler Adams said he knew his team they would be the underdogs when it faced England.
“England has an amazing squad,” Adams told Fox Sports.
“They’re probably one of the favourites to win the World Cup.
“So, we know what we’re coming against and we know we’re probably underdogs going into that game.
“But we’ve always had an edge on our shoulders, we’ve always had a chip on our shoulders and for us playing against a lot of those guys week in week out gives you a little bit of familiarity going into the game.”
