Emporia State University will be expanding one if its concentrations in the Computer Science program thanks to action at the Federal level.
During a visit to the ESU campus Wednesday, Kansas US Senator Jerry Moran announced that a recent appropriation passed by Congress will go to support enhancements in “technology sciences” at the university.
According to Media Relations Director Gwen Larson, the university is receiving a $1.5 million grant that will expand ESU’s cyber security concentration in the coming years. Larson explains that expansion will mean students will graduate with higher qualifications and will be better prepared for entering the workforce.
Larson adds the enhanced programming shows the university is responding to the wants of its students.
Both Moran and Larson believe the enhanced concentration will not only help the state retain and attract new workers, it may also help boost the state’s economy as Moran says qualified cyber security technicians are in high demand across Kansas.
Larson tells KVOE News a portion of the recently announced grant will also go towards providing more public awareness of cyber security both locally and statewide. She says current plans are for the university’s cyber security center to play host to competitions and seminars in the near future.
