Universities across the Triangle received high marks in an annual ranking of U.S. graduate programs released Tuesday by U.S. News and World Report.
Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill earned places near the top of the list in medical research, nursing and other programs. N.C. State University received recognition for its engineering and education programs, as did East Carolina University for its education and primary care medical programs.
For its 2023 edition of the Best Graduate Schools, U.S. News completed statistical surveys of more than 2,150 programs and reputation surveys that it sent to more than 23,200 academics and professionals in fall 2021 and early 2022.
The ranking system has its detractors, as American City Business Journals reported in September, but is nonetheless influential in universities attracting funding and students.
In a news release that highlighted Duke’s graduate nursing program as No. 2 in the country, Vincent Guilamo-Ramos, dean of Duke’s School of Nursing, said the U.S. News rankings are an external measure of the school’s contribution to nursing and nursing education.
“They’re a key indicator that our peers in the nursing community acknowledge the ways our students, faculty, staff and alumni are transforming the future of health care,” Guilamo-Ramos said in the statement.
In addition to the high ranking in nursing, Duke’s ranked No. 6 in medical research, while UNC ranked No. 25. For medical primary care, however, UNC earned a higher spot, with a No. 5 ranking compared to Duke at No. 78. East Carolina also received recognition for its primary care-related medical programs with a ranking of No. 26.
