St. John Bosco football is “about to go where no high school team has gone” — a team-wide name, image and likeness deal with KONGiQ Sports Performance that will “pay compensation to anyone who wants to participate,” according to Eric Sondheimer of the L.A. TIMES. In what is “believed to be the first for a high school,” players who choose to participate will “receive compensation for posting personal experiences on social media accounts using the KONGiQ Sports Performance System and also on the KONGiQ App.” KONGiQ said that the student-athletes also will “be listed as influencers on the company’s website.” This deal is “believed to be $400 for each player who participates, starting with a $200 payment.” St. John Bosco later issued a clarifying statement that “neither the school nor the football program is part of any NIL agreement.” The sports performance company is “entering into individual agreements.” Individual high school players have “been receiving NIL deals,” but a team-wide agreement appears to “be one of the first and could lead to others” (L.A. TIMES, 8/23). In L.A., John Davis writes news of the deal was “notable for what it means about the future of high school sports.” California is one of 14 states that “sanction NIL opportunities for high school students” (Long Beach PRESS-TELEGRAM, 8/23).
JUST THE BEGINNING? USA TODAY’s Dan Wolken writes KONGiQ signing 70-plus players to endorsement deals at one of the top programs in the country could “open the floodgates to something much bigger.” John Bosco coach Jason Negro said, “If there’s something colleges are doing, what better way to help our athletes than to provide them the same type of opportunity? I want to be a pioneer at the high school level, and I think we’re doing that at Bosco.” John Bosco President & CEO and former Univ. of Louisiana-Monroe AD Brian Wickstrom said, “The (California Interscholastic Federation) has some rules around NIL, but there’s a lot of money to be made for high-level schools with high-level athletic programs. I don’t think this is a one-time thing. When you have the visibility of our program or IMG in Florida or Mater Dei, which is our biggest rival, there are people who want to be involved in sponsorships.” Wolken writes the deal also is, “in a sense, real-world preparation for what players are going to encounter as they enter college football.” It is “like an NIL starter kit for teenagers who could be in line to make big money once they sign with a college.” And because programs like Bosco have “so many power conference prospects,” agents and NIL organizers are “trying to build relationships with players earlier and earlier” (USA TODAY, 8/23).
