Klassen named captain — The Portland Winterhawks named Gabe Klassen their team captain on Thursday. The 19-year-old is the 48th captain in team history and is playing his fourth season in Portland. He had career-best 64 points in all 68 games played last season for the Winterhawks and leads the team this year with seven goals so far.
Robbie Fromm-Delorme, Jack O’Brien and Kyle Chyzowski have been named alternate captains.
“It feels awesome to be chosen to wear the ‘C’ for such a great organization with a lot of history,” Klassen said in a press release, “Throughout my time in Portland, I’ve learned how professional everyone here is and it means a lot to be a leader on this team. I’d like to thank my teammates and coaches for the opportunity and privilege to be captain and I’m excited to see where we can take our group this year."
Winterhawks trade Smythe — The Winterhawks traded 20-year-old defenseman Kurtis Smythe to Medicine Hat for an eighth-round pick in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft. The move trims Portland's roster to 24: eight defenseman, 14 forwards and two defensemen.
Smythe played in 121 games over four seasons with the Hawks, including six games this season (one assist). Smyth was an alternate captain for the Hawks last season.
"This move was tough to make, but it's one we feel works well because we can offer our younger defensemen more opportunities to grow and Kurtis can help the young group in Medicine Hat continue their early-season success," Winterhawks coach/GM/VP Mike Johnston said.
College women's soccer — An early goal lifted No. 7 Stanford to a 1-0 win over Oregon in Eugene. The Cardinal (13-2-1, 6-1 Pac-12) outshot the Ducks (4-6-5, 2-4-1) 32-3 (9-2 on goal). Leah Freeman's eight saves gives her 95 so far this season, the seventh most in a season for a UO goalkeeper. … Cal (9-4-3, 4-3) scored twice in the first half of a 2-0 win at Oregon State (4-8-3, 0-6-1)
College volleyball — Pepperdine swept Portland 25-13, 25-15, 27-25 at Chiles Center. The Pilots fell to 9-11, 2-7 in West Coast Conference matches.
MLS Cup Playoffs — A goal in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time lifter LAFC to a 3-2 win over their rival LA Galaxy in a wild Western Conference semifinal match. Cristian Arango scored the winner from a rebound on a corner kick in the 94th minute. Denis Bouanga scored the first two goals for LAFC, each of which was answered by the Galaxy.
The Supporters Shield winners will host the conference final on Oct. 30 against FC Dallas or Austin, who play on Sunday (5 p.m., ESPN).
In the Eastern Conference, Philadelphia beat Cincinnati 1-0 and will host either Montreal or New York City (who play at 10 a.m. Sunday on ESPN) in the conference final.

"We are excited to welcome BJ to the front office here in Portland to help bolster our global scouting efforts," said Joe Cronin, general manager. "BJ has evaluated talent at the pro level and collegiate and amateur ranks while developing great relationships across the world."
He served as assistant director of USA Men's National Team since 2021, after previously working as a scout for Milwaukee since 2017.
He's a 2013 graduate of San Jose State University. He entered the NBA as a video intern for Golden State in 2013-14.
MONDAY, OCT. 17
Portland Timbers — The Portland Timbers have declined 2023 contract options for forward/defender Blake Bodily, midfielder George Fochive and goalkeeper Justin Vom Steeg and, as expected, did not exercise a purchase option on defender Josecarlos Van Rankin.
The club announced Monday it has exercised 2023 contract options for defenders Zac McGraw and Justin Rasmussen and for forward Diego Gutierrez. The club is in contract discussions with forward Nathan Fogaca.
As of Oct. 17, the Timbers roster for 2023:

Andre Burakovsky scored for Seattle (1-2-1).
College football — It figures to be quite the spectacle when Chip Kelly brings his ninth-ranked UCLA Bruins into Autzen Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 22 for a 12:30 p.m. showdown with No. 10 Oregon (FOX). There certainly is no shortage of storylines, and ESPN’s College GameDay is heading to Eugene to get the crowd pumped up beforehand.
Kelly has the UCLA offense clicking like he once did the Oregon attack. Led by fifth-year quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, the 6-0 Bruins are averaging 41.5 points per game and 506 yards a game.
The only team with better scoring and yardage averages in the Pac-12? Oregon. The 5-1 Ducks average 442.0 points and 512.5 yards.
On the defensive side of things, UCLA and Oregon are the top two rushing defenses in the conference, neither allowing 100 yards on the ground. One area the Bruins are statistically superior is pass defense. UCLA opponents throw for 246 yards a game; Oregon foes throw for a conference-worst 275 (a number influenced by the fact that most opponents have been forced to throw to move the ball against the Ducks).
• Oregon State (5-2) goes for a third consecutive win when Colorado visits Reser Stadium for a 5 p.m. contest (Pac-12 Network). The Beavers defense was again dominant at home in a 24-10 win over Washington State Oct. 15.
• Portland State will try to bounce back from a tough loss to No. 6 Weber State, but it'll be another challenge. The Vikings visit an Idaho team (noon, ESPN+) that is coming off an upset win at Montana.
• Northwest Conference: On Saturday, Oct. 22, Linfield hosts longtime rival Pacific Lutheran, George Fox goes up the road to Pacific and Lewis & Clark is at Puget Sound, all 1 p.m. starts.

Mariners — Heartbreak City. That's Seattle after three excruciating losses to the hated Houston Astros in the AL Division Series. Fans who waited 21 years for a home playoff game got two for one … but didn't get to cheer a run scored. A 1-0 loss in 18 innings ended the M's run on Oct. 15 at T-Mobile Park.
The good news is the Mariners have a lot of parts in place to be a playoff contender for the foreseeable future. The bad news is they'll still be in the Astros division.
