New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who was praised around the world for her handling of the nation’s worst mass shooting and the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, said Thursday she was leaving office. Fighting tears, Ardern said she had “given my absolute all” to the job but didn’t have the “gas in the tank” needed to serve another term. Feb. 7 will be her last day as prime minister. She’ll remain a lawmaker until the elections, which she said would be held Oct. 14. Ardern was facing a tough campaign. Her liberal Labour Party won reelection in 2020 with a historic landslide, but recent polls have put her party behind its conservative rivals.
Former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder goes on trial next week in a case that alleges a $60 million bribery scheme federal prosecutors call the largest corruption case in state history. Jurors must decide whether the ousted Republican lawmaker and former Ohio Republican Party chair Matt Borges are guilty of racketeering. Prosecutors allege Householder orchestrated and Borges assisted in a scheme secretly funded by an energy utility to secure Householder’s power, elect his allies, and then pass and defend a $1 billion nuclear power plant bailout. Both men pleaded not guilty and maintain their innocence. Jury selection begins Friday. The trial could last six weeks.

Unlike Thanksgiving, when pie is a given in many households, desserts and confections celebrating the Lunar New Year are as varied as the Asian diasporas around the world that celebrate it. Families from China to the U.S. to Vietnam will mark the new year on Sunday with the usual customs such as elaborate dinners and red envelopes with money for children. There will be customary sweet snacks like nian gao. But in this age of social media, food savviness and cultural pride, younger generations of Asians are also getting more inspired to have dessert courses that are whimsical and creative, from black sesame financiers to peanut butter miso cookies.

As New York opens more legal outlets for recreational marijuana, some public health advocates want more scrutiny on how marijuana products are being marketed to teens and young adults. Flavored nicotine is being outlawed by more states and cities, but similar bans often don’t apply to marijuana products advertised as mad mango, peach dream and cereal milk. In New York, state regulators are considering rules that would ban brightly colored labels and advertising that could entice young people to cannabis products. The proposals would prohibit cartoons and neon colors, as well as forbid packaging that could depict marijuana products as candy, soda, drinks, cookies or cereal.

Prison and union officials say 18 employees of a central Illinois prison have been treated at hospitals after they became sickened while responding to inmates suffering severe discomfort. Illinois Department of Corrections spokesperson Naomi Puzzello says staff were exposed to an unknown substance at Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro Wednesday but are “stable” after treatment. Prison officers and other staff were responding to inmates who appeared under the influence of the substance. Anders Lindall of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 says staff required treatment for dizziness and vomiting. Puzzello says a State Police hazardous materials unit is investigating.
The fate of Indiana’s Republican-backed abortion ban is going before the state Supreme Court as it hears arguments on whether it violates privacy protections under the state constitution. Abortions have been allowed to continue in Indiana since a county judge blocked the law from being enforced in September. Indiana became the first state to enact tighter abortion restrictions after the U.S. Supreme Court eliminated federal protections by overturning Roe v. Wade in June. The arguments being made Thursday before the Indiana justices come after the top courts in two other conservative states split this month on similar state constitutional challenges to their abortion bans, with South Carolina’s ban being struck down and Idaho’s being upheld.

China has accused “some Western media” of bias, smears and political manipulation in their coverage of China’s ending of its strict “zero-COVID” policy. That came as part of a defense of actions taken to prepare for the change in an editorial Thursday in the ruling Communist Party’s People’s Daily. The move in December to end mass testing and quarantines led to a sharp rise in cases, with some hospitals and crematoriums overwhelmed with victims. The writer outlined what they called China’s “optimization and control measures” and blasted reports by the media outlets they didn’t identify as “completely biased hype, smear and political manipulation with ulterior motives.” Life in much of China has largely returned to normal in recent days.
