S.i. Systems Publishes 2023 IT Hiring Report, Labor Rates Up 7% – Yahoo Finance

The 2023 Canadian IT Hiring Trends & Salary Guide is the playbook for successful hiring this year
TORONTO, January 18, 2023–(BUSINESS WIRE)–S.i. Systems ULC, Canada's largest provider of IT contract staffing, direct hire services, and outsourced contractor payroll services, released its annual report on hiring and salary trends for Canadian IT workers. The 2023 Canadian IT Hiring Trends & Salary Guide provides an in-depth look at how various factors are impacting the Canadian IT talent market while giving employers a practical, current view of IT salaries and hourly wages for eight key IT specialties.
"As the largest IT staffing firm in Canada, our team places tens of thousands of IT professionals in critical roles each year," said Leonie Tyler, President, S.i. Systems. "This guide uses that data and other sources to give companies a solid prediction for the hiring climate ahead. It’s the only report of its kind."
According to the report, tech salaries and pay rates increased across the board by 7% in 2022. This was driven by a variety of factors including Canada’s aging population, the borderless nature of remote/hybrid work, and increased demand for IT skills that support or drive digital transformation. In particular, software development saw a record 13% year-over-year rate increase.
"The high remote-ability of software development roles means this talent has no geographic boundaries," said Jeff Cartwright, Chief Revenue Officer of S.i. Systems. "U.S.-based companies that need to execute on their digital transformation initiatives are increasingly looking north for candidates."
The report also identifies cyber security and data and analytics skills as experiencing significant increased demand among Canadian employers.
Grounded in actual salary and hourly wage data from S.i. Systems’ clients, this report gives employers a real-world picture of what’s happening in the Canadian IT talent market and continues a conversation about how to take on this challenge.

The new year is barely underway, but for Apple CEO Tim Cook, 2023 is already memorable — though not in a way you may expect. In an SEC filing, Apple announced that Cook will receive a big pay cut in 2023, and the filing noted that he requested the cut. “Mr. Cook’s 2023 target total compensation is $49 million, a reduction of over 40% from his 2022 target total compensation,” the filing noted.
Last summer, 24-year-old engineer Zaid Khan inadvertently set off a firestorm with a short TikTok video about how he was "quitting the idea of going above and beyond" at work. Thus the term "quiet quitting" was born and sparked both a cultural phenomenon that motivated many workers to rethink their approach to work-life balance as well as angered some executives dedicated to the "lean in" and "hustle" culture of an earlier era. Another buzzy term to be born as a counterbalance to "quiet quitting" is "quiet hiring."

Keep in mind, however, that loans from your employer-based retirement plans are also risky — if you were to become separated from your job, for whatever reason, you’d be responsible to pay it back or it would be treated as a distribution. “I wouldn’t advise this or [have] done it this way, but he’s not stuck and it’s not detrimental — it’s just a tough lesson to learn,” said Jordan Benold, a certified financial planner at Benold Financial Planning.
Tech companies are facing strong headwinds. Microsoft Corp. confirmed plans on Wednesday to lay off some 10,000 workers, equivalent to around 5% of the company’s global workforce. Before that latest announcement, more than 25,000 global tech sector employees have been laid off in the first few weeks of 2023, according to data compiled by the Layoffs.fyi website.

Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ: RIVN) has garnered investor interest since its initial public offering in late 2021.
