PRIME Minister Rishi Sunak has made a surprise trip to Ukraine to meet Volodymyr Zelensky.
The PM was pictured shaking hands with the president, who praised Britain’s help in fighting the Russians.
Mr Sunak announced the UK was to provide Ukraine with £50 million worth of weapons, including anti-aircraft guns to shoot down Russian drones.
The Ukrainian leader in turn praised Britain for its ongoing backing in the war with Russia.
“Since the first days of the war, Ukraine and the UK have been the strongest of allies," he said.
"With friends like you by our side, we are confident in our victory. Both of our nations know what it means to stand up for freedom."
Sunak was in Ukraine to "confirm continued UK support", a No 10 spokesperson said.
"Britain knows what it means to fight for freedom. We are with you all the way," Mr Sunak tweeted.
In Kyiv, the PM laid flowers at a memorial for the war dead and lit a candle at a memorial for victims of the Holodomor famine, before meeting emergency personnel at a fire station.
He said it was "deeply humbling" to be in Kyiv.
"I am proud of how the UK stood with Ukraine from the very beginning," he said.
"And I am here today to say the UK and our allies will continue to stand with Ukraine, as it fights to end this barbarous war and deliver a just peace.
"While Ukraine's armed forces succeed in pushing back Russian forces on the ground, civilians are being brutally bombarded from the air.
"We are today providing new air defence, including anti-aircraft guns, radar and anti-drone equipment, and stepping up humanitarian support for the cold, hard winter ahead.
"It is deeply humbling to be in Kyiv today and to have the opportunity to meet those who are doing so much, and paying so high a price."
The PM follows in the footsteps of Boris Johnson, whose support for Ukraine led him to be awarded the country's highest honour.
During his final visit ti Kyiv, Mr Johnson announced a further £54million of defensive kit to help Ukrainian heroes battle back Putin's evil invaders.
It includes 2,000 cutting edge drones and loitering munitions to flush out Russian troops from their towns and cities.
After leading the Western response to the war, Mr Johnson was decorated with Ukraine's Order of Liberty, the highest accolade bestowed upon a foreign national.
Mr Sunak has already spoken to Mr Zelensky on more than one occasion since entering Downing Street.
He used his appearance at the G20 this week to join with allies and other Western leaders to condemn Vladimir Putin's invasion.
