Crook County is the second-fastest growing county per population percentage growth in the state. Only small Gilliam County, which grew by 84 people, had a higher percentage growth rate than Crook over the past year.
Crook County, one of the state’s fastest-growing counties for several years in a row, grew 2.22%, from 25,595 to 26,162 people, an addition of 567 residents.
The county seat and only incorporated city in the county, Prineville, grew from 11,042 to 11,513, a 4.3% jump over the year.
Last year, Crook County’s growth of 2.48% was second only to Morrow County, which grew by 3.42% in 2021. Oddly, Morrow County, which seat is Heppner and largest city is Boardman, was one of the eight Oregon counties to lose population in this year’s PSU estimate.
The statistics are provided by the Portland State University Population Research Center and were included in last week release of its 2022 estimates.
Gilliam County, with a county seat of Condon, grew 2.76%, with 56 additional residents, from 2,016 in 2021 to 2,071 in 2022.
Across Central Oregon, Jefferson County went from 25,032 population in 2021 to 25,404 in 2022, growing by 1.48%. Deschutes County grew by 1.61%, from 203,916 to 207,206.
The three Central Oregon counties were all among the top seven among the fastest growing: Gilliam 2.76%, Crook 2.22%; Polk 1.85%, Sherman 1.67%, Deschutes 1.61%, Baker 1.52% and Jefferson 1.48%.
Eight counties lost population during the year. Wheeler fell by .69%, losing 10 people, to have the biggest percentage fall. With a small population base, including its county seat of Fossil with 440 people, any loss makes for a large statistical impact. Morrow County fell by .67% (84 people). Multnomah County, dominated by the city of Portland’s population, fell by 2,321 people, dropping .29%. According to the PSU population study, Portland lost 11,076 residents over the year, a 1.69% drop.
Statewide, Oregon grew by .35%, from 4,263,827 to 4,278,555, adding 14,728 people.
Among Central Oregon cities, La Pine and Sisters were the fastest growing compared to their 2021 populations. La Pine went from 2,654 to 2,838 (7.0%) and Sisters from 3,286 to 3,475 (5.8% growth).
Madras had a growth of 353 people, a 4.6% jump, from 7,717 to 8,070. Prineville went from 11,042 to 11,513, a 4.3% jump. Redmond also had a strong increase, from 36,122 people to 37,566, a 4.0% jump. Bend, the state’s sixth largest city, grew by 1,911 people over the year, from 100,922 to 102,834, a 1.9% jump.
Culver added 27 people over the year, growing from 1,636 to 1,663 (1.7%) and Metolius added six, going from 981 last year to 987 (.07%).
Wheeler County’s cities had reported populations of: Fossil 440, Spray 138 and Mitchell 136. Last year, those three cities were listed at 449, 140 and 138, respectively.
Portland is by far the largest Oregon city in population with 647,697. The second largest city is the state capital, Salem, with 179,642, followed very closely by Eugene with 178,259 people.
Gresham, with 114,833 people, is the fourth largest city in the state, followed by Hillsboro at 107,618. Bend, with 102,834, is the only other city with more than 100,000 people.
The numbers reported by the PSU Population Research Center are based on July 1, 2022 figures. Verification of the estimates are under way and a final report issued near the of the year.
