There are 10 Michigan hospitals that rank highly in how they handle uncomplicated pregnancies, according to a new U.S. News & World Report ranking.
The 10 hospitals, topped by University of Michigan Health-Ann Arbor, earned a “high performing in maternity care (uncomplicated pregnancy)” recognition. The rankings are based on metrics such as low C-section, new complications and episiotomy rates, transparency on racial/ethnic disparities and more.
The maternity care hospital at UM Health is the Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital. Officials at the hospital credited the rankings recognition on their emphasis towards “compassionate” care, said Dr. Dee Fenner, chair of the Michigan Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
“Maternity care is critical to the health and wellness of our communities,” Fenner said.
“Families who come here can expect high quality, compassionate and inclusive birthing options with a focus on safety and evidence-based care,” Fenner said.

The next four Michigan hospitals rounding out the top-5 are Beaumont Hospital-Grosse Pointe, Spectrum Health’s Butterworth and Blodgett campuses in Grand Rapids, Beaumont Hospital-Farmington Hills and McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital.
Less than half of the 650 hospitals across the nation evaluated in the rankings received the “high performing” recognition.
The others in Michigan were Memorial Healthcare-Owosso, Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial in Fremont, Spectrum Health Pennock in Hastings, Spectrum Health United in Greenville and Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital.
A number of other Michigan hospitals provided their data to be included in the rankings, but were not considered “high performing. The full list can be found here.
