You’ll need to take action before the deadline to get your money
This week is the last chance you have to claim any unclaimed stimulus or child tax credit funds. Millions of eligible families still haven’t filed claims for their IRS benefits, the IRS stated in October. If that applies to you, you must take action before the cutoff date in order to receive your money.
Many people who are still waiting for payments did not file a tax return because they were exempt from doing so or because they needed more time. Both of these payments’ eligibility was determined by the IRS based on tax filings. And if you belong to one of these groups, the last day to receive your money is quickly approaching.
Whether you must file a tax return or not affects the date for claiming your money. In general, if you file as a single person and make less than $12,550 annually, you are not required.
If you don’t generally have to file taxes, you have until Thursday, November 17, to submit a simplified tax return in order to receive any unclaimed stimulus funds or child tax credits. The IRS is keeping the free file site available until November 17 in order to assist.
If you have to file a tax return but already requested an extension this year or hadn’t done so yet, the due date was October 17. That was also the deadline for submitting Form 1040 in order to avoid a late-filing fine.
You have until February 15, 2023, to register a claim if you were impacted by one of the recent natural disasters, such as Hurricane Ian. You have until Tuesday, November 15 to file if you reside in a region where the Federal Emergency Management Agency has declared a disaster, such as Missouri or Kentucky.
