New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley is heading into Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium against the Houston Texans as the NFL’s third leading rusher this season with 779 yards. The Texans are last in the league in run defense, allowing an average of 180.6 yards. So it’s easy to project Barkley is going to have a big day as the Giants try to improve their playoff hopes. But he says it’s not that simple, noting that Seattle had an iffy run defense but was effective against the Giants. Opponents have been putting more players in the box to stop the Giants’ run-heavy offense.
Business Highlights: A summary of the day’s top stories in the business world.
The Denver Broncos have ruled out three players and added three others to their injury report with unspecified illnesses. Coach Nathaniel Hackett said linebacker Baron Browning will miss the game as will receiver KJ Hamler and tight end Andrw Beck. Hamler and Beck both pulled hamstrings at practice this week. Hackett said linebacker Nik Bonitto, cornerback Darius Phillips and receiver Kendall Hinton were sick. He declined to say whether those illnesses were non-COVID-19. The Titans have ruled out four starters, all on defense. Tennessee will be without tackle Jeffery Simmons, linebackers Bud Dupree and Zach Cunningham and safety Amani Hooker.
MUNICH ― Halfway through his post-practice news conference Friday in front of more than 100 media members, Tom Brady was presented with a gift: customized Bucs lederhosen, the traditional Bavarian trousers with suspenders sometimes worn during Oktoberfest.
Borussia Dortmund’s trying week has ended with a final sting after Jonas Hofmann led Borussia Mönchengladbach to a 4-2 rout of his former team in the Bundesliga. It’s Dortmund’s second loss in four days after falling at Wolfsburg 2-0 on Tuesday. It potentially leaves Dortmund nine points behind leader Bayern Munich for the league’s extended winter break. Bayern visits last-place Schalke on Saturday. Dortmund’s pride was already hurt on Thursday when Mats Hummels and Marco Reus were left out of Germany’s World Cup squad. Hofmann was called up. He celebrated by scoring two goals and setting up another.
NASA says its moon rocket needs only minor repairs after enduring a hurricane and is on track for liftoff next week. A top official said Friday that the wind never exceeded the rocket’s design limits as Hurricane Nicole swept through Florida’s Kennedy Space Center. But he said if the launch team knew in advance that a hurricane would hit, they would have kept the rocket indoors. The rocket was moved out to the launch pad late last week. Gusts reached 100 mph atop the launch tower Thursday, but were not nearly as strong farther down where the rocket stood. NASA is shooting for a Wednesday launch.
Karim Benzema returned and Alexandre Lacazette’s late penalty rescued a 1-1 draw for Lyon against Nice to keep his team just ahead of the visitors in the French league. Former Lyon forward Benzema was given a hero’s welcome as the Real Madrid player presented his Ballon d’Or to the home fans before kickoff. The decision to award Lacazette’s penalty was debatable as TV replays showed he was already off balance and falling before the alleged contact from Jean-Clair Todibo. It looked like Nicolas Pepé’s retaken first-half penalty would be enough for Nice. Lacazette’s late penalty keeps Lyon eighth and a point ahead of Nice.
An Idaho judge is considering whether to split up the trials of a newlywed couple accused of conspiring to kill her two children and his late wife. EastIdahoNews.com reports an attorney for Chad Daybell asked a judge Thursday that his client be tried separately from Lori Vallow Daybell. Attorney John Prior says the two will present defenses that are diametrically opposed to each other. Daybell and Lori Vallow Daybell have pleaded not guilty nd could face the death penalty if convicted. Judge Steven Boyce says he’ll consider the request to split the cases and issue a written ruling.

The chances for legalizing recreational marijuana in Minnesota got a huge boost from the Democratic sweep in the state’s elections. Gov Tim Walz confirmed Friday that he told former Gov. Jesse Ventura that he thinks it could be one of the first bills he signs next year. The Republican majority that blocked consideration of cannabis in the Senate will be gone when the 2023 Legislature convenes. Democrats will control both chambers and the governor’s office. Interviewed on WCCO Radio, Walz indicated Ventura will be invited to the signing ceremony because Ventura was one of the first governors across the country to support legalization.
Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay have confirmed a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup. Their government officials signed documents in Santiago to present to FIFA. Chilean Football Association president Pablo Milad says, “This is the first legal step we need to take.” The four nations want to celebrate the centennial of the World Cup. Uruguay hosted first tournament in 1930 with 13 teams. Uruguay also won the first title after beating Argentina 4-2 in the final. The South American bidders plan to offer 18 stadia. Prosecutors in Seattle say a young woman made two harrowing attempts to escape her vicious pimp that ended with her rescue by a ride-share driver who engaged in a gunfight with the man. Authorities said this week that Winston Burt was arrested as he left a rental home accompanied by other women he had trafficked. Authorities say his street name, “Dice Capone,” was tatooed on the faces of some women he trafficked. Burt is being held on $750,000 bail. It’s not clear if he has an attorney who can speak on his behalf. The woman who escaped was taken to a hospital with severe injuries.

Arizona’s largest county could soon begin reporting the results of paper ballots dropped off at polling places on Election Day. And that should provide clues about whether Republicans can overtake Democrats in critical races for U.S. Senate and governor. With half a million ballots remaining to be counted statewide, Republican Senate candidate Blake Masters would need to win more than 60% of them to defeat Democratic incumbent Mark Kelly. In the governor’s race, Republican Kari Lake would need to win just over half of those remaining to overtake Democrat Katie Hobbs. By early Friday afternoon, Kelly led Masters by 5.6 percentage points, while Hobbs led Lake by 1.4 points.

Markets got a boost after China relaxed some of its anti-COVID measures, while a report suggested U.S. inflation expectations ticked modestly higher. Bayern Munich and Celtic have been fined by UEFA for fans showing banners judged to be offensive at Champions League games. Bayern fans spelled out an expletive on a pitch-side barrier fence Viktoria Plzeň on Oct. 12. It was to protest the 70 euros ticket price.
