Watch California’s newly reelected Democratic governor closely in 2023. He has been making unmistakable moves that signal his interest. He’s taken on the conservative governors of Florida and Texas and won accolades from Democratic Party insiders for his aggressive, unapologetic stands on issues like gun violence and abortion rights. He’s suggested that President Joe Biden, who turns 80 this month, is not suited for the brutal political climate.

The U.S. Interior Department’s plan to withdraw hundreds of square miles in New Mexico from oil and gas production for the next 20 years is expected to result in only a few dozen wells not being drilled on federal land surrounding Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Land managers on Thursday released an environmental assessment of the plan first outlined by Interior Secretary Deb Haaland in 2021 in response to the concerns of Native American tribes in New Mexico and Arizona. Environmentalists say the agency needs to take a broader look at the cumulative effects of development if they want to preserve cultural sites and limit pollution from ongoing development beyond the proposed withdrawal zone.
Former President Donald Trump hailed a “Big Victory” on Friday and prepared to go ahead with plans to launch his 2024 White House campaign even as Republicans licked their wounds from a historic flop in the midterm elections.
Right-hander Nick Martinez opted out of his contract with the San Diego Padres and became a free agent after going 4-4 with a 3.47 ERA in his return from Japanese baseball. Martinez turned down a $6.5 million player option, instead triggering a $1.5 million buyout that ended his contract after one year and $7.5 million. He made 10 starts and 37 relief appearances for the Padres and had eight saves. If he had kept his contract, he would have been guaranteed $25.5 million from 2021-23.

Michigan saw a record turnout for a midterm election, with control of the governor’s office and controversial referendums on abortion and voting rights in the balance. But with a heightened focus on voting problems and irregularities nationwide, reports of long lines of voters waiting to cast ballots late into the night Tuesday in the college community of Ann Arbor became a target for false information. Elections officials, government watchdog groups and other experts, however, said the election process was carried out according to state law.
BRUSSELS — Language opposing the use of nuclear weapons seems set to be in next week’s G20 closing agreement, given that Russia is amenable to the wording, according to EU sources.
The Indiana Fever earned the first pick in the WNBA draft for the first time in franchise history. The Fever had a 44% chance to get the No. 1 pick after having the worst combined record the past two seasons. The Minnesota Lynx will pick second with the Atlanta Dream having the third pick and the Washington Mystics the fourth. The Lynx had the lowest chance to get the No. 1 pick, but moved up two spots in the draft lottery. It’s been a busy offseason for the Fever, who had the the No. 2 pick last season and chose NaLyssa Smith. Indiana, which hasn’t made the postseason since Tamika Catchings retired in 2016, just hired Christie Sides as their new coach last week.

New Jersey’s Willingboro Township has renamed the Levitt Parkway as Veterans Parkway in a tribute to those who served in the nation’s military and rebuking a piece of institutional racism in the township’s past.
Members of a Republican Congressional delegation took the stage at this year’s U.N. climate talks Friday to tout the benefits of fossil fuels. Their appearance shortly before President Joe Biden’s speech was a bold move at a meeting that’s all about curbing carbon emissions to save humanity. Rep. John Curtis of Utah said it would be wrong to demonize fossil fuels and suggested they should not be equated with greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists overwhelmingly agree that heat-trapping gases from burning coal, oil and gas are pushing up global temperatures. Rep. Dan Crenshaw from Texas said that replacing coal with natural gas would already result in big emissions cuts. Several experts contacted by The Associated Press said that would not be as effective as renewable energy.
The Organization of American States has launched an external probe into allegations that Secretary General Luis Almagro may have violated the organization’s code of ethics while carrying on an intimate relationship with a staffer. As a result of Friday’s near unanimous vote, the OAS will seek to hire a company to look into whether Almagro violated the OAS’ code of ethics or any other staff rules that prohibit supervisors from favoring co-workers with whom they are romantically involved. Almagro said he supports a transparent investigation of his relationship with a woman who he said was his “partner” for nearly three years until their breakup a few months ago.
New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley is heading into Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium against the Houston Texans as the NFL’s third leading rusher this season with 779 yards. The Texans are last in the league in run defense, allowing an average of 180.6 yards. So it’s easy to project Barkley is going to have a big day as the Giants try to improve their playoff hopes. But he says it’s not that simple, noting that Seattle had an iffy run defense but was effective against the Giants. Opponents have been putting more players in the box to stop the Giants’ run-heavy offense.
The Denver Broncos have ruled out three players and added three others to their injury report with unspecified illnesses. Coach Nathaniel Hackett said linebacker Baron Browning will miss the game as will receiver KJ Hamler and tight end Andrw Beck. Hamler and Beck both pulled hamstrings at practice this week. Hackett said linebacker Nik Bonitto, cornerback Darius Phillips and receiver Kendall Hinton were sick. He declined to say whether those illnesses were non-COVID-19. The Titans have ruled out four starters, all on defense. Tennessee will be without tackle Jeffery Simmons, linebackers Bud Dupree and Zach Cunningham and safety Amani Hooker.

Borussia Dortmund’s trying week has ended with a final sting after Jonas Hofmann led Borussia Mönchengladbach to a 4-2 rout of his former team in the Bundesliga. It’s Dortmund’s second loss in four days after falling at Wolfsburg 2-0 on Tuesday. It potentially leaves Dortmund nine points behind leader Bayern Munich for the league’s extended winter break. Bayern visits last-place Schalke on Saturday. Dortmund’s pride was already hurt on Thursday when Mats Hummels and Marco Reus were left out of Germany’s World Cup squad. Hofmann was called up. He celebrated by scoring two goals and setting up another.
NASA says its moon rocket needs only minor repairs after enduring a hurricane and is on track for liftoff next week. A top official said Friday that the wind never exceeded the rocket’s design limits as Hurricane Nicole swept through Florida’s Kennedy Space Center. But he said if the launch team knew in advance that a hurricane would hit, they would have kept the rocket indoors. The rocket was moved out to the launch pad late last week. Gusts reached 100 mph atop the launch tower Thursday, but were not nearly as strong farther down where the rocket stood. NASA is shooting for a Wednesday launch.
Karim Benzema returned and Alexandre Lacazette’s late penalty rescued a 1-1 draw for Lyon against Nice to keep his team just ahead of the visitors in the French league. Former Lyon forward Benzema was given a hero’s welcome as the Real Madrid player presented his Ballon d’Or to the home fans before kickoff. The decision to award Lacazette’s penalty was debatable as TV replays showed he was already off balance and falling before the alleged contact from Jean-Clair Todibo. It looked like Nicolas Pepé’s retaken first-half penalty would be enough for Nice. Lacazette’s late penalty keeps Lyon eighth and a point ahead of Nice.

Daybell and Lori Vallow Daybell have pleaded not guilty nd could face the death penalty if convicted. Judge Steven Boyce says he’ll consider the request to split the cases and issue a written ruling.

The chances for legalizing recreational marijuana in Minnesota got a huge boost from the Democratic sweep in the state’s elections. Gov Tim Walz confirmed Friday that he told former Gov. Jesse Ventura that he thinks it could be one of the first bills he signs next year. The Republican majority that blocked consideration of cannabis in the Senate will be gone when the 2023 Legislature convenes. Democrats will control both chambers and the governor’s office. Interviewed on WCCO Radio, Walz indicated Ventura will be invited to the signing ceremony because Ventura was one of the first governors across the country to support legalization.

Uruguay hosted first tournament in 1930 with 13 teams. Uruguay also won the first title after beating Argentina 4-2 in the final. The South American bidders plan to offer 18 stadia. They include Uruguay’s Centenario Stadium, site of the first World Cup final.

Authorities said this week that Winston Burt was arrested as he left a rental home accompanied by other women he had trafficked. Authorities say his street name, “Dice Capone,” was tatooed on the faces of some women he trafficked. Burt is being held on $750,000 bail. It’s not clear if he has an attorney who can speak on his behalf. The woman who escaped was taken to a hospital with severe injuries.

Levran is being held on a $1 million bond. His attorney, Joseph Lavigne, told The Associated Press Friday that Levran intends to defend himself against the charges.
