A South Korean court has approved the extradition of a 42-year-old woman facing murder charges in New Zealand over her possible connection to the bodies of two long-dead children found abandoned in suitcases in August. The Seoul High Court said Friday its decision came after the unidentified woman agreed in writing to be sent back to New Zealand. The court had previously planned to review her case on Monday to determine whether she should be extradited and now says that session is no longer necessary. With the court approving her extradition, it’s now up to South Korean Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon to make the final call on whether she’s sent to New Zealand.

The Atlanta Falcons were one of the NFL’s feel-good stories the first month the season. But the NFC South might be starting to slip away from the Falcons after three losses in four games, including a disappointing 25-15 defeat to the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night. It was Atlanta’s second loss in five days after falling 20-17 to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday — and a game it had to have to remain in first place in the division. The Falcons entered the night tied for first with Tampa Bay, but dropped a half-game behind the Buccaneers, who’ll play Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks in Munich, Germany.

Supply chains, Russia’s war in Ukraine and the impact of COVID-19 are top of mind for U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen as she prepared to meet with Indian leaders in New Delhi. She was speaking Friday to tech leaders at the Microsoft India Development Center to address U.S. concerns. Among them were Russia cutting off gas supplies in Europe and China’s chokehold on global solar panel production. The United States is pursuing an approach called “friend-shoring” to diversify away from countries that present geopolitical and security risks to the supply chain. Yellen hopes to open up economic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific. She will meet with India’s finance minister later Friday.

Belgian authorities say that a lone assailant who killed one police officer and wounded another in a stabbing that was being investigated as a possible terrorism-linked attack had gone to a police station earlier to express hatred for them. Authorities said Friday that the suspect had made “unhinged remarks” during a discussion with officers hours before the attack. Since he voluntarily asked for psychological help, he was not arrested and was instead sent to a hospital, which he left soon after. After the stabbings, the suspect was almost immediately shot by another police official who had rushed to the scene. Wounded, he was taken to a hospital.

The Arab world’s most populous country is taking steps to convert to renewable energy. Experts say that Egypt, with near-perpetual sunshine and windy Red Sea coastlines, is well-positioned to go green. But it’s also a developing country and like others, faces obstacles in making the switch. Much of the infrastructure in Egypt is geared toward fossil fuels, with more than half of its electricity coming from natural gas. And a string of new gas discoveries may slow the country’s transition towards renewables. Egypt is also battling with an economic crisis that has been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Tropical Depression Nicole was moving through Georgia Friday morning after a day of causing havoc through Florida as a hurricane and then tropical storm. The National Hurricane Center says the rare November hurricane could dump as much as 6 inches of rain over the Blue Ridge Mountains by Friday. Flash and urban flooding will be possible as the rain spreads into the eastern Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic and New England through Saturday. Nicole had spent Thursday cutting across central Florida after making landfall as a hurricane early that morning near Vero Beach. The brunt of the damage was along the East Coast well north of there, in the Daytona Beach area.
Pakistan is back at the venue where the legend of the cornered tigers was forged 30 years ago. And England is again the final foe. There are so many similarities between this unlikely run to the Twenty20 World Cup final and the one inspired by Imran Khan in 1992 when Pakistan beat England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to claim its first World Cup title. There are also differences. Skipper Babar Azam isn’t 39, for a start. Khan was in the twilight of his career when he led his ‘cornered tigers’ in that win over England. The 28-year-old Babar could match Khan’s feat at the MCG on Sunday — this time in an international cricket format that didn’t exist in the 90s.

The arena did not release a program for the event.
Logan O’Connor and Mikko Rantanen each scored twice, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Nashville Predators 5-3 on a night when the team paid tribute to longtime color analyst Peter McNab following his death earlier this week. O’Connor had two goals within a 1:25 span during a four-goal second period that helped the Avalanche take control. The team showed few signs of jet lag in its return from Finland, where Colorado recently completed a two-game sweep of Columbus as part of the NHL Global Series. The Avalanche played with heavy hearts in memory of McNab, the former NHL player turned broadcaster who died Sunday at 70. Eeli Tolvanen, Ryan Johansen and Roman Josi had goals for the Predators.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are both claiming the mantle of freedom in their election day victories. Both men easily won second terms governing two of the nation’s most populous states. Newsom said voters affirmed that California is a true freedom state because women can choose to get an abortion. DeSantis said Florida has been a citadel of freedom for people across the country who reject what he calls the woke agenda of the left. Both men’s philosophies could soon compete in a presidential election. Whether that happens in 2024 or later depends in part on whether Joe Biden and Donald Trump decide to run for president.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has arrived at a crossroads. She could be forced to relinquish the gavel if Republicans win majority control of the House. Pelosi is the nation’s first and only woman to become speaker. The uncertainty surrounding her future comes just weeks after her husband, Paul Pelosi, was brutally attacked when an intruder broke into the family home in California looking for the speaker. She was in Washington at the time. Speaker Pelosi has said the attack will affect her decision about whether to remain in Congress. She won her own re-election representing San Francisco. She has served for 35 years.

The No. 12 Texas Longhorns honored slain Houston Christian star Darius Lee before the teams played Thursday night, a tribute planned by the players. Lee was killed last June in a shooting in his hometown of New York City. Lee, a 21-year-old senior who had been set to graduate in December, led the team in scoring and rebounding last season when it was known as Houston Baptist. The Longhorns came onto the court for warmups wearing shirts in Texas school colors with Lee’s name and his No. 23. Texas players then gave the shirts to Houston Christian players. Huskies players also wore shirts honoring Lee. Texas coach Chris Beard praised his players for coming up with the idea. Texas won the game, 82-31.

Asian stock markets have surged after U.S. inflation eased by more than expected, spurring hopes the Federal Reserve might scale down plans for more interest rate hikes. Hong Kong jumped 5.7%. Shanghai, Tokyo and Sydney also advanced. Oil prices edged higher. Wall Street had its best day in 2 1/2 years after the government reported consumer prices rose 7.7% over a year ago in October. That was lower than the 8% expected by economists and the fourth month of decline. Investors worry the Fed and other central banks might tip the world into recession as they try to cool inflation. Forecasters warned it was too early to be certain prices are under control.
